• Pre-plan your meal and try to oven-bake as many items as possible at the same time.

• Use the oven light instead of opening the oven door to check food. Every time you open that door you’re losing 20% of the oven’s heat.

• Pre-heating the oven is necessary for baked good, but isn’t really for roasting meat. Also, turn the oven off 15 minutes before your roasts cooking time. The oven will retain enough heat to continue cooking.

• Make sure your stove top burners and reflectors are clean and your cookware is in good condition, maintaining contact with the burner. Warped pot bottoms can use up to 50% more energy than flat pot bottoms!

• Use minimal heat when boiling items and use a lid to contain heat. Once you’ve reached a boil, turn down the burner. A higher setting won’t cook your food sooner.

• Use pots sizes that match the size of your burners. Cooking with a 6-inch pot on an 8-inch burner reduces its efficiency by 40%.

• Keep an eye on the dishwasher and open the door before it gets to the heat-dry cycle. Letting your dishes air dry instead will save 50% of your dishwasher’s energy consumption. Or you can do dishes by hand, the old fashioned way!
