The cost of green energy comes down – what’s next?

The United Nations (UN) released a report this month stating that renewable energy has passed a “positive tipping point” globally, where renewables, such as wind and solar, will become cheaper than fossil fuels. They’re also becoming more widespread.

This article reports that 74% of the growth in electricity generated worldwide comes from solar, wind, and other green sources. This is positive news that can provide hope amid the somewhat gloomy progress in fighting climate change.

The article also reported that electric vehicle sales have increased to $17 million, up from $500,000 ten years ago.

Additionally, renewables are becoming increasingly cheaper and more accessible. Solar power is now 41% cheaper and wind 53% cheaper globally than the lowest-cost fossil fuel. Since coal, oil and natural gas are the leading causes of climate change, this is good news!

UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, said, “The fossil fuel age is flailing and failing. We are in the dawn of a new energy era. An era where cheap, clean, abundant energy powers a world rich in economic opportunity.”
