Alberta Government Announces $28 Million for Emissions Reduction and Energy Innovation

Last week, the Alberta government announced a $28‑million investment through its industry‑funded Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program. It is to support six energy and emissions reduction technology projects across the province. The funding is part of Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Industrial Transformation Challenge, aimed at helping companies adopt new technologies that cut emissions, lower costs, and expand energy production. Officials say the move will help Alberta meet global energy demand while reducing environmental impacts and keeping local industries competitive.

Environment and Protected Areas Minister Grant Hunter told the Western Standard News that “The world wants our energy, and these technologies can help us deliver while lowering emissions and keeping our industries competitive for decades to come.”

The six projects funded span different parts of Alberta’s energy and resource economy. They include:

  • Testing new technology to improve the safety and reliability of carbon capture pipelines
  • Converting agricultural waste into renewable natural gas (RNG)
  • Restoring old oil and gas sites with advanced cleanup methods, and
  • Reducing methane emissions at energy operations

For example, among the supported initiatives is a facility in Coaldale that will use advanced digestion processes to turn cattle manure into clean energy.

Government ministers said that the investment is a way to grow the economy, cut emissions, and develop Alberta‑made solutions that can be scaled globally. Projects like these also align with broader efforts to improve environmental outcomes while maintaining energy security and job growth in the province.
