5,000 megawatts to be added to Ontario’s electrical grid

The Ontario government is looking to add about 5,000 megawatts to the grid to meet future demand. In a press conference last week, the province’s energy minister, Stephen Lecce, said new projects will be a mix of natural gas, hydroelectric renewables, nuclear and biomass.

Lecce said the province will need at least 60% more energy by 2050.

How the procurement will happen is still being discussed. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) will develop a plan for the process by September 20 of this year.
