The Alberta government tabled legislation that would allow utility companies to blend hydrogen with their natural gas supply for home and commercial heating.
“Hydrogen presents an enormous opportunity and we want to ensure our province can remain a global leader,” Utilities Minister Nathan Neudorf said at a legislature news conference.
Hydrogen is easily ignitable and more explosive than natural gas. If passed, Neudorf said the province will work with regulators to set an acceptable blending rate. In addition, they hope to empower the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) to decide who will pay to build new infrastructure or boost capacity for current systems.
Critics say that the government is focused on future options, like hydrogen plants and carbon capture, but not adapting to technology that is available right now: solar, wind, energy storage, etc. They think Alberta should be advancing the solutions that are already right in front of us.
