Alberta’s stance on renewables has pushed projects out of the province

It has been over eight months since the Alberta government lifted its moratorium on developing new renewable energy projects in the province. Unfortunately, the investment lost during that pause is yet to return. Construction for these projects is happening elsewhere.

To compare, about 1,000 megawatts of new wind farm projects were announced in Alberta in 2023, whereas only 50 megawatts were announced this year.

“When businesses are faced with those types of uncertainties, they pull back a little bit, and they look for other places to invest,” said Sol Hutson, from the solar tracker company NEXTracker at the Electricity Transformation Canada conference in Calgary last week.
