The Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia have worked together to designate four areas for Canada’s first offshore wind projects. Developing a strong offshore wind industry will help provide the province with long-term energy security from a sustainable, clean source.

The area boasts incredible wind speeds, and with the proper infrastructure, it could generate a significant amount of clean energy. Plus, Nova Scotia will be positioned to send its wind power west to help power other parts of Canada.

“The identification of wind energy areas off the coast of Nova Scotia is a significant step forward towards unlocking our renewable energy potential. We are moving quickly to deliver on our commitment to advance offshore wind, create clean jobs and support our long-term energy security.”

— Tim Hodgson, federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources

The next step in the project is calling for bids later this year. The province aims to license 5 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030 and position itself as a leading exporter of clean energy.

The projects will create quality jobs, serving as an investment in East Coast communities and strengthening Nova Scotia’s and Canada’s economies. It’s an important step in Canada’s transition to renewable energy.
