Four solar projects get the go-ahead in Ottawa

Ottawa city council recently approved four significant solar power projects in the nation’s capital. Experts believe this is just the beginning and more could follow soon. Two of the projects are in Kanata North and two in West Carleton-March.

Councilor Cathy Curry of Kanata North County said, “Nothing is more important right now than energy. We talk about how energy is the new gold.”

These projects still need provincial approval, but will help meet the growing demand for electricity in a changing world. Curry commented that she thinks more renewable energy projects will get the green light in Ontario.

The demand for electricity is partially caused by an explosion in the population. More people living in the province means more people using electricity. Thanks to falling costs of renewable energy and battery storage systems, energy sources like solar can be competitive with traditional fossil fuels.

John Kirkwood, president of the Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-operative (OREC), was quoted in this article from the CBC:

“We’re looking forward to absolutely more renewable energy. And it’s not just because it feels good or it’s nice,” Kirkwood said. “We believe it’s literally cheaper than nuclear, than natural gas, and it’s obviously better for the environment. So we think it’s a benefit in many respects.”
