Clean energy jobs are on the rise in Canada, while jobs in fossil fuels continue to plummet. Now, fossil fuel employment is below 1% of the Canadian workforce.
According to a report from the Centre for Future Work, oil production increased 35% and natural gas 24%. However, 38,000 jobs in these industries have dropped off in the last five years.
“This long-term decline is set to continue for many reasons, not solely or mostly climate policy. New technologies, economic forces, resource depletion, and corporate outsourcing strategies are all eliminating fossil fuel jobs,” stated the Centre for Future Work in their release.
Here are some key takeaways:
- The shift away from fossil fuels is happening on its own, not because of national climate policy.
- The current pace suggests a full fossil fuel phaseout by 2050.
- Most workers today will reach retirement age by that time.
- Workers expect industry decline but believe the transition can be managed without major job loss.
- Federal “just transition” efforts have been heavy on consultation but light on real action or guarantees.
- Transition planning is unclear because Canada isn’t yet moving toward a broad fossil fuel phaseout, aside from the 2030 coal mandate.
