Canada’s National Observer published an interview with Heather Shilton, the Director at Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation (NNC), about her northern community’s clean-energy transition. In the Q & A, Shilton shared about NNC, Nunavut’s first 100%, Inuit-owned renewable energy developer. They aim to empower northern communities to take ownership of renewable energy projects.
Their largest project aims to replace Iqauit’s diesel-generated energy with hydroelectricity. They also have a dozen other projects in the works, including micro-grid solar and battery storage, community wind and solar projects, and building-specific projects.
Shilton comments that climate change is becoming a daily reality and challenge for people in the north. For example, hunters can get lost as they are unable to read the changing and melting ice the way they’re used to, due to unpredictable weather patterns.
NNC hopes to have people across the North engage in this project and re-imagine the bright futures that are possible.
