Wind energy is expected to play a major role in Newfoundland and Labrador’s transition to cleaner energy. But there are still big questions about how a land-heavy industry like wind-to-hydrogen can be developed in a way that benefits local communities and protects ecosystems.
The future of wind-to-hydrogen in the province has been uncertain. Several major projects have been cancelled or shut down, including companies that lost access to Crown land after failing to make progress or pay required fees. At the same time, some projects are still moving forward, such as EVREC’s proposed wind-to-hydrogen development near Botwood, which aims to begin exporting to Europe later this decade, along with a smaller green energy hub project in Come-by-Chance.
As some hydrogen projects slow down or stop, companies are rethinking how to use the province’s strong wind resources. Ideas now include powering data centres, producing green steel or biomethanol, and building transmission links to move electricity through Québec and into northeastern U.S. markets.
