Canada’s electricity needs are changing as more communities move toward cleaner energy and greater electrification. To support this transition, the Government of Canada announced in July that it is investing in modernizing its power grids to improve reliability, support renewable energy, and help keep electricity affordable for Canadians.
One example is a new investment of more than $4.5 million to upgrade the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Regional Electricity Cooperative’s distribution system in Quebec. The project will help strengthen the local grid, integrate renewable energy and battery storage, and support new technologies that help customers better manage their energy use.

This investment will enable us to continue rolling out smart meters and a secure communications network to improve electricity consumption management, service quality and infrastructure resilience.
